A Haunted Feast

Halloween is simply a few days away, costumes have been mostly made or ordered and children have been noticing the Halloween decorations in peoples front gardens. Anticipation is certainly growing. However, I feel like Halloween is always getting that balance between devouring copious amounts of candy and trying to squeeze in some sort of substantial meal and hopefully some fruit?

But how do you do it?

Here are a few ideas to create a fun themed Halloween feast that I'm sure everyone will enjoy, and it is so simple too (phew!).

Main Course: Spider Infested Pizza

Pizzas can be made in advance whilst the kids are at school, or it is also something really fun to get your kids involved in.

Pizza dough is easy to make with some pre-made mixes like this one:

Tips:

When shaping the dough, make sure there is plenty of flour on the countertop to stop it sticking.

I then place the dough onto a baking sheet with corn meal on it. The corn meal will make it much easier to remove the pizza off the tray. I find baking paper tends to stick to the pizza dough. Also, decorating the pizza once its on the baking sheet will make life much easier for you.

Once happy with your dough, spread your pizza sauce and sprinkle on shredded mozzarella.

To make the creepy spiders, simply slice a black olive or Kalamata olives in half and then slice another olive into strips for the legs.

Add any other favorite toppings, then pop into oven using your packaging guidelines.

To swish the spooky spiders down, I have taken my charges favorite drink, milk, and decided to add some delicious dirt and worms.

To make these 'dirt' rimmed glasses, all you need to do is melt a small handful of chocolate in a bowl, dip a glass into the melted chocolate, and then dip the glass into a bowl of chocolate sprinkles.

I like to pop a worm into the bottom of the glass as a surprise- A trick and a treat :)

No feast is complete without desert, and with the obvious amount of candy, I wanted to share something I found which I thought was pretty neat. For years I have drawn on orange and banana peels, leaving little messages to the children and funny pictures.

This year I discovered you can easily turn a tangerine into a pumpkin with a small piece of celery, and with some chocolate chips you can make faces on bananas to create Boo-nana ghosts.

I thought this was too good not to share, and will be a good way to encourage some fruit consumption on this candy filled night.

For those who may be looking for a Chilling Halloween Story, The Witches by Roald Dahl is simply superb!

I hope you all have a fabulous feast with spider infested pizzas, squirmy drinks and yummy boo-nanas! Happy Halloween!
